The Village of Hinsdale was founded in 1873 following the construction of the Burlington Northern Railroad. One of the more affluent communities in the Chicagoland area, Hinsdale features truly luxury custom homes, mature trees, nationally ranked public schools, and an easy commute to Downtown Chicago.
The village was originally two communities that merged into one in 1923. The first community was Fullersburg. This primarily agricultural settlement was founded by Benjamin Fuller in 1835. The Graue Mill that was used by the farmers to grind their crops still stands just north of where Spring Rd. and York Rd. intersect. During the Civil War, Graue Mill was used as a stop on the Underground Railroad. Today, it is a museum and is host to many festivals and gatherings. The second community was founded by Williams Robbins in 1862. He built the first school, where Hinsdale Middle School stands today. Over time the town developed along the railroad line and transformed into a bedroom community where people traveled to Chicago for work, just as it is today.
Hinsdale had been a 'dry town' since Prohibition began in 1920. It wasn't until 2002 that Hinsdale finally appealed Prohibition through a referendum. As a result, there are now some of the finest restaurants in Chicago's Western Suburbs located in Hinsdale.
Commuters can catch the Burlington Northern train line at three different stations across Hinsdale, and reach Union Station in 22 minutes express or 40 minutes on the local. Hinsdale is also very conveniently located between O'hare Airport and Midway Airport, and also the expressways I-294, I-290, I-55, and I-88.
